Music fills our lives, and we have all played with lyrics and tunes as we’ve made our way through our days. This course offers students the opportunity to practice and improve their songwriting ability.
The course is open to experienced musicians and neophytes; all students will be challenged at their own level. Assignments will run the gamut – students might be asked to write new lyrics for old songs, to write a blues or ballad, or to write a song with a particular chord progression. We’ll spend a majority of time writing, both individually and in small groups, as well as performing and workshopping our songs. We’ll share favorite songs with one another, and analyze them to figure out what makes them tick. We may be visited by guest speakers or performers, or take field trips to hear music in our area. We’ll also take a one-day field trip to the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, to learn about and be inspired by some of the great artists of our time.
By the end of the course, each student will have a portfolio of recordings to share. Winterim fair will offer a chance to perform our compositions for a larger audience, as well as a space to display some of the research and learning that we have done.
The course fee covers the purchase of a USB-capable keyboard which students will use as a transcription and recording tool. These keyboards will be the students’ property.
